This is a method also used by the Finns except the Finns use an actual measurement for the leach line with the boom sheeted onto the deck in order to create consistency. That measurement is 6.02 m and then the outhaul is adjusted to achieve a desired leech tension in kg. I see that the method used by OKs just suggests sheeting the boom to sailing position and adjusting the leeach line to achieve 24kg. How do you achieve consistency with this approach? For instance what is intended to be the sailing position and how is this replicated?

As long as the tension is the same it should be consistent - the difference between the angle of pull at the mast tip would have to be negligible for different boom positions (within a reasonable range anyway). I think the Finns use this method to also set their mast rake, in which case it is obviously extremely important to have the leech line at exactly the right length. I've tried using a scale to set mast rake on my OK. Turns out it wasn't as helpful as I thought - our boats are nowhere near as standardised as the Finns are, and we generally don't have the finely-adjustable mast steps and deck bearings that they do, so it's hard to fine-tune to that degree.

Well l have been trialling the new mast now over the past 2 weekends. First weekend a good wellington breeze of 20-35knts, the best thing that came out of this was at least it didn't break! Downwind fantastic , upwind very hard to handle . Mental note to rake the mast further aft! This weekend (mast rake increased) day 1 about 10knts, day 2 12-18knts. Pretty bloody awesome in these conditions ;D. I think with a bit of sail recutting the heavy air will be fixed as well. So to date it shows a lot of promise! Over the spectrum of wind ranges I think compared with my old rig that this is an improvement altho still early days.

A final word of warning my fine feathered friend ;D.....isn't that almost exactly what you were saying about the mast I won the worlds with.....there is a saying "those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it". Alex is waiting for your call, don't delay, beat the christmas rush and order yours today! ....and no I'm not on commission! But seriously it is a rig that won't suit light weights, so I'm afraid you will have to persist with what you have.

Its just hilarious how these trends go around in circles.
A whole group of us started with masts along this line of thinking (albeit a bit less extreme) back in 2003.
Like any rig these dogs had their day - and that was flat water with a moderate breeze. Solution across the range? - Nup I don't think so..
Pleased I'm not writing the cheques this time.
But hey anything that slows Purds down in a big breeze gets my vote!
Cheers

Sweden Gear used 1st Jason King Delf - New mandrill High Mod C-Tech - Modified Quantum 2nd New Icebreaker - Old Mandrill High Mod C-Tech - Quantum 3rd Delf - Danish Mast - Danish Sail 4th Jason King Delf - Old Mandrill High Mod C-Tech - Standard Gale (not my usual) 5th New Icebreaker - New Mandrill High Mod C-Tech - Quantum 6th Icebreaker copy - Not sure.
Don't know if the new mandrill masts are any better, I think it easier for the builder to make. Greg liked his better than his older one. Thomas had done a lot of sailing, so had Karl, plus they had done a lot of fitness work. Jorgen was quick as always, and I got faster as the week went by. The top 4 were a little faster upwind in 15knots and over. Thomas was quick on the reaches, and I was quick on the run.
